See the World Like an Artist

Module 2 — Light & Dark

In this module you will learn how to use contrast to add depth and interest in your work.

Note: In the videos I mention the date July 29. This course is now self-paced — you don’t need to follow that date. Just watch the videos and do the exercises in your own time.

Lesson 1 — Residual forms

I talk about residual forms.

Exercise:

Choose a simple photo or a view around you.

Look for the residual forms: the shapes of the empty spaces around and between the objects.

Make a quick sketch where you only draw these residual forms, not the objects themselves.

Lesson 2 — Shadows

Notice the shadows around the object.

Exercise:

You will need: a sheet of paper and black and white acrylic paint.

Make a painting using only black, white and grey tones.

Focus on the shadows, especially the darkest areas.

Tip: Squint your eyes to see the dark tones more clearly.

Lesson 3 — Light Glance

Learn to “squint” with your eyes. You will see big light and dark shapes first.

Exercise:

You will need: a sheet of paper, charcoal and a kneaded eraser.

Make a charcoal drawing of your subject.

Then use the kneaded eraser to remove the charcoal where you want the light areas.

Keep looking for the shapes of the light.
